Okay,
So I'm trying to think of a functional usage for the 2.5 gallon water containers once they are empty. Is there any useful purpose for them.

Mon, March 26, 2007 - 10:41 PMI use the ones with handles on 'em in my workshop all the time; they're great for dispensing mixed soluble oils into smaller containers, etc. Also good for monster scoops if you cut the bottoms off. Good funnels, lousy windchimes tho, heh.

Re: uses for 2.5 Gallon water containers.
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 3:49 PMIf you remove the labels.
and grind it up, ( oh say for the creative - upside down lawn mower ) or a very heavy duty paper shredder
you have to keep all the same plastic together/ seperate colours, and know what it is what.
the local pop bottler- recycler will / may take the shreddings
They make money on selling the ground up plastic, and often get subsidized by the municipality -- so you could talk to them and get them to bend at the recycler...
not the best use, beats the landfill.

Fri, April 6, 2007 - 10:57 AMI wondering about on playa uses. Something that could be constructed... or a plausible usage. -

Re: uses for 2.5 Gallon water containers.
Sat, April 7, 2007 - 5:39 PMA piss bucket for the tent or when you are in deep playa and there isn't a JOTS for dozens of feet. If you make the hole big enough you can share it!
They make good scrap/ trash cans too. at ByB we use them at the bike stands to deal with the leftovers that no-one seems to take.
Maybe a Sumo wrestling suit??

Re: uses for 2.5 Gallon water containers.
Fri, April 20, 2007 - 1:49 AMI have found both 2.5 and 5 gallon water bottles quite useful as containers for the brown water collected from the sun shower and kitchen. When the bottles are filled with either potable, non-potable, or brown water, they make excellent camp weights. Put them in tents, at the corners of tarps, or as anchors for light rigging.
Smaller water jugs with handles can be rapidly deployed to pin down loose gear during windstorms. Fill them with water or sand. Cut a quarter diameter section from the top down the spout opposite the handle and use them as containers for hardware, tools, food, light bulbs, etc.. Carry one around when you strike camp to collect loose equipment or trash.
Put a rope light or christmas tree strand inside blue plastic bottles and they become cylindrical beacons ideal for camp illumination and playa navigation markers.
that's just a few of MANY MacGyverish tasks at Black Rock.

Mon, April 9, 2007 - 9:55 PMHey if you're going to have a bunch of 'em you could line 'em up, then fill 'em with increasing quantities of something and wind up with a musical instrument of sorts...

I use them all of the time- as MOOP buckets, of course!
Cut a good-sized hole where the spigot is (but not big enough to leave a trail of MOOP behind you), put your belt through the handle, and take a walk. Your friends will watch in amazement as you show them all of the neat junk you found amidst the splinters of wood and zip-ties along the esplanade!
