dust gear

topic posted Tue, August 15, 2006 - 7:37 PM by  Murphy
I am looking for items that are crucial to have before, durning and after dust storms. I've been twice to BM and both years were pretty mellow in comparison to some. Any ideas other than the obvious masks, goggles, ect...

*thanks*

    Good question....

I'm a wergin burner, but I've worked and lived and played in dry, dusty and hot places most of my life.

A couple of things that I've seen or used in other places that I haven't see many pictures of on the playa are:
Capes - great for hot and dusty cause you can wrap them if you get cold or dusty, and then open them up totally when it is gone.
Headgear - turbans, shawls and headcovers keep dust out of your hair, ears and neck. And they are dead easy to make.
Gaitors - Useful for deep snow, but also for deep sand or dust. Keeps the stuff from running down your boots.
Dust Saw - Sometimes it gets so thick that the best way to deal with it is to cut it into chunks and stack them. (Same idea as a bullshit saw)

I'm guessing that bugs and critters aren't a problem, otherwise there is a ton of other critter related stuff that would be useful.

    Cheers

Gaitors won't matter, as there is no deep dust or sand.

However, wearing a full on Bedouin robe is very handy. Keeps you cooler, keeps you from needing sunscreen, and you can use that head piece to keep the dust out of your mouth during a dust storm (just hold it between your lips to keep it in place over your face). I made mine mostly out of white sheets.

I wish more people would bring a flashlight during the day. Art cars often don't stop during a white-out. Your light colored Bedouin robe is nice camouflage. Don't be a dust wad!

All art cars are absolutely required to stop during a white out... besides, everything is pretty much playa colored during those.

I do have a blue headband, so there's that.

But yeah, any art car driving during a white out is going to have a huge risk of running someone over, regardless of what they're wearing.
