So I am in charge of the greywater system for our Burning Man camp (Bicycle Refreshment Unit at 730 and bipolar) and I was wondering if any of you have any advice on which plants fair the best as a sump for greywater? Don't worry we are still going to have an evap station, but I was hoping to try to divert some of the greywater to a few plants. I was thinking about using a willow in a planter since I know they like a lot of water. Maybe even placing some of those synthetic water absorbing granules in the soil matrix.
Any other suggestions? Has anyone tried placing water hycinths (sp?) in the evap station to see if they survive/soak up the water? Oh yeah, if you have any recommendations on where to get such plants kind of cheap in the Portland area that would be cool too. Thanks. Capt Salamander.

Thu, September 8, 2005 - 10:40 PMYou need to contact CPR from the 3:00 Bicycle camp, another true Playa MacGyver. He built an awesome system with water flowing over a black flat surface recirculated with a pump. Will try to bring him on the tribe. -

I would think any plant that needs lots of water to survive, would end up dying due to the heat...it's that desert vs. water thing.
I've heard of people putting water pumps and lave rocks to speed up the evap rate...
let me know if you learn anything good.

Tue, January 9, 2007 - 2:35 PMwould a mist system help?
what about creating a fine mist around plants? it might create a cooler spot. aid in evaporation too.

Re: Plants for Burning Man Greywater use?
Tue, January 9, 2007 - 2:42 PMIf you have live plants the gate will not be allowed into BRC. Plants die on the playa and the leaves become moop so the prohibited from entering. Last year at the gate I overheard them explaining this when they found some kind of living plant matter in a trailer. -

Wed, January 10, 2007 - 1:37 PMDanger Girl,
That isn't entirely accurate. Live plants are allowed (or at least, have been in previous years) but you have to account for them in the camp plans (including the clean up plan) submitted to BMORG, and get approval for having them. I'm not surprised that they wouldn't take kindly to unannounced plant life being brought in through the gate..
Examples of plants on the playa include Xara (a sod floor was delivered to the camp on-playa), an art installation that included grass in the center of a labyrinth, and other camps just last year (whose names escape me) that have had sod/grass floors.

Re: Plants for Burning Man Greywater use?
Sat, June 2, 2007 - 9:36 PMPlease see the following link re: plants on the playa.
www.burningman.com/preparat...ants.html
This is part of the "required reading" link, by the way, so unless you are planning on transporting all of your greywater home and then letting the plants deal with it, I would say the idea is a no-go.
