The true Playa MacGyver has a very high standard identifying "matter out of place." One man's trash is another man's treasure. Therefore, I would like to coin a new acronymic expression within the Burning Man community: MAAP, or "matter available for another purpose."
This thread will show how "recycle" is the third option of the "three Rs," the first two being "reuse and renew." We can also argue whether "MAAP" or "MAFAP" is a better cool new burner word, but whichever one people start using, the Admiral takes credit for originating it 5/26/05 (and I've lived by it way before now too).

Sat, May 28, 2005 - 8:34 PMDon't you hate all those circulars in thin plastic bags that end up on your front porch? Not me! Pick up a few of these and throw them in your car. Here are some uses:
1. small bags make great holders for small pieces of garbage. Put two or three together for a stronger container.
2. Use the bag like a glove when you have to go under the car or lift the hood to keep your hand clean.
3. Put the paper in your lap when eating in the car to keep falling food particles off your clothes.
4. Jam the newspaper into the gaps between objects that rattle annoyingly when you drive.
There are many more great MacGyver applications for these familiar pieces of supposed trash.

9v battery caps
Sun, May 29, 2005 - 7:45 PMNew 9 volt batteries come with small rectangular black plastic caps that snap on to their terminals to prevent shorting. Before throwing them out, consider these Playa MacGyver applications:
1. snap two together and make a small spacer.
2. use as links between thin sticks in parallell to make a flexible flat surface.
3. cut a slit through the long sode of the cap into both center holes so you can push the side of a wire or string into the holes . use to keep wires from tangling. perfect size for leads of a multimeter!

toilet paper tubes + fabric softening sheet = smoke disguiser

take one empty toilet paper roll tube and insert 2 or 3 bunched up fabric softener sheet in one end, filling tube only halfway. take a drag of *whatever*, put empty part of tube to your mouth, upon exhalation a great deal of the smoke gets additionally filtered into the material and the rest has some unidentifiable bouncy fresh-ish scent.
